Sandy was Instrumental!

"Sandy was instrumental in me achieving the birth I wanted: a natural, drug free VBAC in a hospital setting. Her care, knowledge and experience made my husband and I a stronger more effective birth team and gave us both confidence to do what we needed to do. I would never choose to birth without her again.

After a traumatic first birth, when I became pregnant with my second child I went in search of a doula. My husband and I wanted someone we could trust, who would be with us throughout my pregnancy and birth. For us, this meant someone who was highly experienced and knowledgable, who understood evidence based practices and who would work hard to ensue our goals and values were respected. We also wanted someone who could care for us unconditionally, especially during the birth, and who would support my husband's role as my support person, not take over from him. When I first called Sandy I sensed that she might fit this bill, and when we met in person for the first time, I was convinced.

In the prenatal period Sandy was incredibly helpful. Even though I thought I knew all I needed to know about birth, she lent us books from her library which perfectly filled the gaps I didn't realise I had. She gave us just the right books to read at the right time, setting us up for success.

Sandy was also available whenever we needed her. She was very generous with her time and knowledge, answering my calls and helping me calm down during my various pregnancy freak outs. As the birth approached we felt increasingly confident in my ability to birth naturally and my husband's ability to support me.

During the birth Sandy was incredible. I honestly don't know how she knew exactly what we needed at each point. When I needed to chat, she chatted and supported me through contractions. When I needed to rest she gave me a restoring massage which sent me to sleep between contractions. When we needed to get things going, she knew exactly what to do.

I can't think of a single thing that Sandy could have done differently or better. She knows so much about birth - the scientific facts and the collective wisdom of generations - and she is also so skilled at building a trusting relationship with mamas and their partners. To me this is a special and rare combination. Perhaps I would've had a great birth without her, but I'm so glad I didn't have to find out. I know she significantly increased my chances of achieving the best birth we could've had. Knowing what I know now I would never try and do it without her again."
